The Tank Vehicle (N) Endorsement Theory Course is the complete FMCSA-aligned theory program for any CDL holder seeking the N endorsement to operate liquid- or gas-carrying tank vehicles. Eight chapters covering surge physics, tank specifications, pre-trip inspection, loading and outage, federal weight limits, and emergency procedures — written by a working trucking instructor who knows what actually happens when liquid moves inside a tank at 60 miles per hour.
This course is built for CDL holders adding the N endorsement to their license, fuel and chemical haulers transitioning into tank work, and dry-bulk drivers who want a deep understanding of the physics and federal rules that make tank vehicles different from every other rig on the road.
It's also the right fit for anyone preparing for their state DMV tank endorsement knowledge exam who wants the federal source material explained clearly — not a recycled question bank.
What You Will Be Able to Do
Upon completing the Tank Endorsement course, you will be able to perform a complete tank vehicle pre-trip inspection, identify the differences between baffled, smooth-bore, and compartmented tanks, calculate liquid surge effects and adjust your driving accordingly, manage outage and load distribution, recognize hazmat-in-bulk requirements when applicable, respond to leaks and emergency situations on a loaded tank, and operate within federal weight limits across single, tandem, and bridge formula calculations.
The curriculum is mapped directly to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry curriculum standards for the N endorsement — covering tank vehicle definitions and types, vehicle inspection, safe operation, retest requirements, and emergency response.

Prerequisites
You must already hold a valid CDL or Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) before adding the N endorsement. No prior tank experience required. You'll need a computer, tablet, or phone with a reliable internet connection. Most students complete the course in one to two sittings.
This course covers the Theory portion of ELDT only. The N endorsement also requires passing your state's tank vehicle knowledge test at the DMV. Some states require additional skills testing — check with your state CDL office for specific requirements.
