The Class B CDL — ELDT Theory Course is the complete entry-level driver training theory program required by 49 CFR Part 380 Appendix B for anyone obtaining a Class B Commercial Driver's License for the first time. All 29 federally-required theory lessons, taught in plain English by a working trucking instructor — not a marketing team, not a recycled DMV manual.
This course is built for first-time CDL applicants stepping into the world of heavy straight trucks — box trucks, dump trucks, garbage and refuse trucks, delivery trucks, utility trucks, and the larger buses that move people instead of freight. It's the right fit for career-changers moving into local delivery work, construction-adjacent driving, municipal jobs, and bus driving, as well as for students who plan to start with Class B and upgrade to Class A later as their career develops.
It's also a strong fit for anyone preparing for their state DMV Class B permit knowledge exam who wants more than a question-bank cram session — every chapter explains the why behind the rule, not just the rule itself.
What You Will Be Able to Do
Upon completing the Class B CDL ELDT course, you will be able to perform a complete pre-trip vehicle inspection on a heavy straight truck, identify and respond to vehicle system faults, manage hours of service compliance, operate a Class B vehicle safely in city, suburban, and highway conditions, navigate hazard perception and emergency maneuvers, secure and transport cargo according to federal rules, and demonstrate the non-driving knowledge required of every CDL holder — from medical qualifications to whistleblower protections.
The curriculum covers all five federally-mandated areas: Basic Operation, Safe Operating Procedures, Advanced Operating Practices, Vehicle Systems and Reporting Malfunctions, and Non-Driving Activities — exactly as defined in 49 CFR Part 380 Appendix B.

Prerequisites
No prior trucking experience required. You'll need a computer, tablet, or phone with a reliable internet connection, and the commitment to work through all 29 lessons in sequence. Most students complete the course in 1–2 days; you can move as fast or as slow as the material asks of you.
This course covers the Theory portion of ELDT only. Federal law also requires Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) training in a Class B vehicle, which must be completed in person with a registered training provider on the FMCSA TPR list before you take your CDL skills test.
Thinking About Class A Later?
Many Class B drivers eventually move up to Class A for over-the-road freight and combination-vehicle work. If that's on your radar, finish your Class B with us first — when you're ready to upgrade, our Class B to Class A Upgrade ELDT Theory Course is built specifically for drivers like you, covering only the 22 additional theory units FMCSA requires (the 8 non-driving units you'll complete in this course are not repeated). It's the most efficient legal path from Class B to Class A.
